Happy Birthday, Boris!

A full week of world wide blogs all about one of my favorite movie stars. I was just thinking how odd this slender, bow legged actor should shoot to international fame playing a mute giant. Today we think first of that voice... and those eyes! The legend has it when Jack Pierce first made Karloff up as the Frankenstein monster, it was Boris himself who suggested they putty up his eyelids to ratchet up the undead factor. Boris Karloff playing his signature role with his eyes partially obscured strikes me a little like Shirley Temple singing "On the Good Ship Lolly Pop" with her dimples plugged up. But there you are.
